Training resources

Asbestos is extremely dangerous and kills lots of people every year. The government has made a real push to make more people aware of the dangers of Asbestos.

Some training companies offering Asbestos awareness training courses include Boss Training who offer asbestos training courses around the UK at various training centres..

Setting up a Health & Safety Training Company

Amongst the many start ups and business opportunities I read about one of the ones which stands out from the crowd is setting up a training company. Not the type of training that people can do without; you know the sort of stuff – leadership skills, management, life coaching etc etc.

These courses are fine in the good times when companies have plenty of money to splash around. However, in a recession when money and particularly training budgets are tight and being cut back this type of training course is quite often the first to feel the squeeze.

No, I’m talking about real necessary training courses which people have to do in order to do their job. The Health & Safety industry has thrived in recent years with the introduction of the Work at Height Regulations, Control of Asbestos Regulations and CDM regs amongst others. Love it or hate it (and many people find it a pain!) but Health & Safety is here to stay. The construction industry in particular has embraced this because in recent years it has had a lot of bad press due to the number of accidents and fatalities. Falls from height were always a big problem. In fact, a fall from height is still accounting for more serious accidents and injuries in construction. It is getting better but there is still a long way to go.

One of the reasons for this improvement is down to the willingness of construction companies to accept their responsibility under the Health and Safety at Work Act to ensure that all their staff are properly trained and competent.

For example an IPAF Training course addresses the hazards of operating scissor lifts and cherry pickers. This equipment is becoming more and more popular on site and is essential for anyone using these machines. Another popular course is the PASMA Training Course. This deals with the use of lightweight mobile scaffold towers and the associated hazards. A big opportunity exists in the provision of Asbestos Awareness Training as this is now a legal requirement.

There has never been a better time to set up your own Construction Health & Safety training company. Of course, you will need to be familiar with Health and Safety. Going on all of the above courses yourself will help. Also a course such as Nebosh would be good as this would give you a professional qualification. You can employ trainers on a freelance basis at first until you have built up a large enough client base to employ full time instructors. There are also the membership fees of IPAF and PASMA to consider. These are not cheap but if you are serious about starting a business it is well worth considering. There is always the satisfaction of the knowledge that you have helped workers to be able to do their job much more safely. Who knows, your training may even save someone’s life!
